Travelling with a baby

0-6 Months

When Riley was 9 weeks old Carl book a holiday to Dubai to celebrate my 30th Birthday, this was something I had been thinking about all throughout my pregnancy and we just decided to go for it. We had no idea what it would be like to travel with this tiny human that we had only had for such a short time but thought how bad could it be? I mean all they do is eat, sleep and poop so what difference would it made if we were at home or abroad.

Everyone we spoke to with or without kids had a real mix of opinions on how this would go. The flight alone was 7 hours, plus the 3 hours that you have to be at the airport before you flight and not to mention the amount of stuff you have to take for a baby is ridiculous! All that being said we had the best time and he was an absolute dream.

When you fly with a  baby they don’t get a luggage allowance which you would think why would they, he is so tiny how much space would his clothes possibly take up. Well when you take in to account that we were there for 6 nights so that’s at least 12 outfits (this is a lot but it’s so hot in the day and then we had to make sure he had warm enough clothes for when we were inside as they pump the air con out), at least 15 vests, sleeping bag, nappies, bottles, toys and enough milk for the million feeds a day.

So I got organised and pre ordered his milk, nappies and any other liquids that i wanted that would be over 100ml to be collected in Boots at duty free, we could have got the nappies there but I just thought its one less thing we have to worry about when we arrived. This worked out great, I got a mixture of our Aptamil milk in powder and pre-made so we wouldn’t have to worry about boiling the water and then cooling it down if we were out of the hotel or by the pool. The hotel was perfect for us because they provided a cot, bottle steriliser and fridge which meant we had everything we needed.

Like every airline you are able to check in two items though which can be a pushchair, car seat or travel cot. He was so good on the flight, slept the whole way there and most of the way back and even when he was awake he was quite happy to just sit on our laps.

6-12 Months

This age range we took him to Spain at 6 months to my parents and everything was much the same as our first flight apart from we knew what we were doing a bit more so didn’t take as many bottles, clothes because we were staying at my parents so could wash bits if we needed and we only needed a few bottles because the flight was much shorter.

When he was 9 months old we went to Portugal for a week, this holiday was a challenge! As first time parents we didn’t really know what to expect but I think this was probably the wrong time to go away. He was crawling and walking around if he was holding the furniture so we had to really watch what was on the floor in out room. He was also not as laid back as he was at 9 weeks old and was not that keen on wanting to lay in the shade and play that we had anticipated, he was wanting to explore which was tough to do round a pool.

He was also at the stage of weening so I again ordered his milk and nappies from Boots but this time I also took baby porridge and a few organic snacks, because we were staying at a hotel we were able to get fresh fruit and yogurt for him too.

12-18 Months

Just before his first birthday we decided to go away for the weekend to the Christmas markets in Berlin. I always cook his food fresh but on the occasion that this isn’t possible I just make sure I find something as fresh as possible for him to eat. I knew that a weekend away would be fine because he was at the stage of pretty much eating what we were having so the only things I pre ordered from boots were nappies, teething essentials, snacks, baby porridge and milk.
The luggage was challenging because we only took hand luggage and because it was so cold out there it was a little tricky to pack all our thick jumpers in to two small cases but we did it and again worked out great.
We stayed in a hotel/apartments which were perfect, even though we ate out we had the option of using the oven, cooker if we needed too. Plus we had a microwave which was so handy for sterilizing the Mam bottles.

These little people do need a lot of stuff when you take them anywhere but its slowly getting less and less. I even had a clear out of his baby bag and i thought I can probably get away with putting his essentials in my bag.

Hope this helps anyone that is thinking of travelling with a little one.

Mauka Doctor

Happy Saturday everyone!

Having a nice chilled one this weekend and thought I’d update my blog as I haven’t written anything in a while.

My skin is so all over the place still after having Riley but these products really do help. I got these lovely Manuka Doctor products for my birthday so I’ve been using them for about a month now and I’ve really fallen in love.

I started actually putting Manuka Honey in hot water and lemon as a way of soothing mouth ulcers or sore throat so I really do love the product already but when I saw Kourtney Kardashion was a brand rep for Manuka Doctor I knew it had to be a great brand. She is all about being natural and when it comes to my skin so am I.

I have the Purifying Facial Peel which makes my skin instantly made my skin feel so much nicer and instantly glow. It only takes 10-15 to dry too so is great to quickly pop on while Riley is down for a nap.

They also had a great marketing campaign where you could upload a selfie of your self-using the mask and peeling it off. #mdfacialpeelchallenge.

I also received an platinum introductory kit, this has a great selection of products to try if you’re thinking about changing skin care brands. In the kit you get ApiNourish Rejuvenating Face Mask (25ml), ApiClear Skin Treatment Serum (15ml) and Rub Ease Balm (25ml)

I really love all of these products but especially the skin treatment serum, any signs of a blemish and this seems to reduce it over night! Must be that Purified Bee Venom!

Highly recommend all these products and will defiantly be adding them to my daily routine.

They have a great website with lots of information about all their products so go check them out.

Riley’s 1st Birthday

1-336I wanted his first day to be really special because when Riley was born we both were quite sick in hospital and ended up having to spend 7 nights in hospital, which happened to fall over Christmas Day. So I wanted him to have a really good celebration, which I know he will be too young to remember but we took lots of photos and it was more for us to enjoy celebrating with him.

When it came to inviting people the list was quite big due to friends of mine that had children, his friends and family so I decided to take advantage of my husband not finishing our new greenhouse/shed and make a Christmas grotto. His birthday falls on the 22nd December so I decided to go with the Christmas theme.

I really enjoy party planning and wanted to make it all really unique for him. The shed/grotto was already quite rustic looking because it had one brick wall and the others I decorated with pom poms that I made my self which took me hours, I did these when Riley was put to bed as between him and the dog they liked the unravel the balls of string. I bought paper snowflakes from the £ land, used an old rug I luckily had lying around for the floor and put an old wood burner we had laying around in and made a fireplace around it using bricks. We had an old fake Christmas tree and lights so I put that up and wrapped cardboard boxes for presents and bought some fairy lights to dress the brick wall.

We weren’t lucky enough to have real snow on the day so my husband bought a snow machine from eBay to add to the effect, you may think this is very extravagant but it was only £40 and I thought it would make it all look extra magical for the older ones.

In doors I wanted to keep it quite simple so I just did buffet style party food, marshmello and chocolate sticks, popcorn snowmen cups, sparkly squash ( I put editable glitter in orange squash), melted snowmen (water) a birthday cake and mulled wine for the adults.

We had a real mixture of ages of children that came so I decided not to do party bags and I did mini gingerbread men and reindeer food with name tags for them.

… Did I mention that Father Christmas even stopped by, I happen to have a friend who’s Dad actually plays Father Christmas for Children’s parties.

Unfortunately it turns out that Riley doesn’t like Santa 😦

Personalised Gifts

Riley’s birthday falls on the 22nd December which unfortunately for him just so close to Christmas, so I thought I would spread his Christmas presents out over the year as he is still too young to know.

I decided to treat Riley and get him a white hooded fleece robe from as it comes beautifully personalised with the choice of 7 colours of text that will be embroidered.

I went with Cambria font in mink.

Riley is 14 months old but I ordered it in size 2-3yrs because I thought the weather is going to hopefully be getting warmer soon but it will be a perfect for the end of the year when lighting the fires and getting the fairy lights back out. Can you tell I am organised?

All of their orders arrive beautifully packaged in the My 1st Years luxury gift box, which is so lovely for the keepsake presents and especially great if you were buying a gift.

He is really suffering at the moment with teething, so when he unwrapped it yesterday he seemed so happy to stay in comfy clothes snuggle up.

Im trying to wean him off using his dummy and were down to just using it for naps and bed time. However because he was a little grumpy and emotional yesterday I gave in just while I was getting ready as it gave me some time to quickly get dressed. A one off but he just looked so sad bless him.

Hoping to get him back to his smiley self soon.

Hope everyone’s having a good week x

They Grow Up So Fast

I know your always told “they grow up so fast” by people with older children but I can’t actually believe how fast he is  actually growing!

Ive just packed away all his 6-9 and 9-12 month clothes are being stretched out because Im not ready to give them up.

I really want to go mad and buy him lots of new clothes as im loving all the camo colours that are out at the moment but im trying to hold back as I know the weather is surely going to start getting warmer soon and all the summer clothes will be out.

Riley has really got in to the swing of walking now too. He still has his first pair of stroller shoes from Clarks because I think it’s important that he is in the correct footwear while he is still learning to walk. I did also just treat him to his first real pair of trainers from office, some camo Vans. He loves them too and keeps going over to them and trying to put them on when were in the house which is very sweet. They must feel so different to his other shoes though because he does this funny walk in them, as if he’s wearing bricks for shoes. Guess he just needs to get used to wearing shoes.

14 Months Postpartum

I was lucky to have a great pregnancy with Riley but I do think the exercise helped give me that extra energy boost. During the early weeks of pregnancy me and a friend who was also pregnant decided to join a pregnancy pilates class to help us work on our core and pelvic floor and also keep our legs, bums and arms toned. The classes were so great, Sandrine who is the founder of the pilates studio was the perfect teacher having 5 children herself, so it was great to get advice from her and to be reassured that our bodies were changing and not to worry as we would get them back.

I was quite active during my pregnancy, very rarely was too tired to exercise and when I was I took it easy and just went swimming or I saw an acupuncturist and she helped me through it. Before I was pregnant I was exercising a lot to get my perfect wedding body and after the wedding and kept it up so I was as healthy as I could be for when I fell pregnant. I was doing cordio Pilates, power plate classes, spinning and body attack and my local fitness centre.

So when I found out I was pregnant I was keen to find out if I could keep this all up. My midwife assured me that I was fine to carry it all on ( apart from the power plates) as I exercised before, I just couldn’t do sit ups because they would damage my stomach muscles and let’s face it, what’s the point?

I also kept up with my Body pump and spinning, although I suffered with such bad stitch from even walking a few steps so I had to give the spinning up at about 24 weeks.

Riley decided that he was far too comfortable to make an appearance on his due date which was the 16th December 2015, so I went in to panic mode as I really wanted him hear before Christmas. I decided to carry on at the gym as much as I could in the hope that he would get fed up of me going and I was doing 3 Body pump classes a week.

Luckily he was only 6 days late and was born 10am on 22nd December 2015.

When you have a baby it’s a shock to the system and take months to feel like your old self again but I was keen to get back to exercising as quick as possible to help get my old body back.

After my 6 week check I had the all clear so I started very gently with Pilates and getting back in to my normal gym routine and classes slowly.

Remember it takes 9 months for your body to prepare its self for having a baby so it’s going to take at least that long for it to recover, don’t beat yourself up if it take a long time to get back to how you looked before. I’m still not 100% happy but I eat well and exercise regularly so I know it will come back eventually.
